Message	garage door springs, so if they should snap they wont go far. This is current building code in NJ, the home inspector brought it to my attention when I bought the house 3.5 years ago. Less than $20 for parts at Lowes, and about an hour to install, your story makes me very glad I added this bit of insurance. When you buy new garage door springs, I'm pretty sure that the safty cables are included. You may want to find out about the building codes in your area, may provide some leverage with the landlord if his rental property was not up to snuff. Good Luck
